What you need it for
Edge-Connect places the contacts on the edge of the board rather than on its surface. The target board needs no mating connector at all — just the plated half-holes along the edge and the holes for the guide pins. That saves space and the cost of a component on every board you build.
What "2AP" means
Two guide pins instead of one. The connector cannot be seated askew and stays reproducible over repeated cycles. Tag-Connect recommends this version for all new designs using the 14-pin Edge-Connect.
Compatibility, important
ECV3 is the third generation and is not compatible with the earlier Edge-Connect families. If you are working with an older board, you need the older cable — both remain available.

Note from the manufacturer
Where a debugger uses 14-pin headers natively — MSP430, TI and ADI DSPs, Renesas MCUs — Tag-Connect offers alternatives that often reduce the footprint on your board even further. Ask us if you would like to look into that.
How it differs from the ECV3-14-2AP-ETM
Both end on a 0.05″ pitch and the headers look similar. What differs is the pin count: this cable has 14 pins and carries JTAG and SWD — everything needed for flashing, breakpoints and stepping.
The ECV3-14-2AP-ETM has 20 pins (Cortex-20) instead and additionally carries the trace signals. You only need those if you want to record program flow. For everything else this cable is the narrower and more common one.
If in doubt, count the pins on your debugger: 14 or 20.

So it is your debugger that decides, not your board. If in doubt, measure the pin spacing on your programmer.
