Programming FPGAs and CPLDs over JTAG
FPGAs are almost always programmed over JTAG, and every vendor ships its own cable with its own connector. A Tag-Connect footprint on the board saves the same as with microcontrollers: no connector, no line in the bill of materials, no component height.
