What you need it for
Edge-Connect places the contacts on the edge of the board rather than on its surface. The target board needs no mating connector at all — just the plated half-holes along the edge and the holes for the guide pins. That saves space and the cost of a component on every board you build.
What "2AP" means
Two guide pins instead of one. The connector cannot be seated askew and stays reproducible over repeated cycles. Tag-Connect recommends this version for all new designs using the 14-pin Edge-Connect.
Compatibility, important
ECV3 is the third generation and is not compatible with the earlier Edge-Connect families. If you are working with an older board, you need the older cable — both remain available.

Why fourteen contacts and twenty pins
The board side carries fourteen contacts, the header at the debugger twenty. The additional lines are the trace signals of the Cortex-20 connector — they are added at the header end and take no space on your board.
This is the version for Extended Trace (ETM): if you want to record program flow rather than only debug, you need those signals. For plain flashing and stepping, one of the IDC versions is enough.
How it differs from the ECV3-14-2AP-IDC-050
Both end on a 0.05″ pitch, and at first glance both headers look alike. The difference is the pin count — and what travels through it:

If your debugger has a 20-pin Cortex header and you want to evaluate trace, this is the cable. If flashing and debugging is all you need, take the ECV3-14-2AP-IDC-050 — it is narrower and fits more devices.

So it is your debugger that decides, not your board. If in doubt, measure the pin spacing on your programmer.
